Dr. Holzman Looks Back at his First Plastic Surgery Evaluation – On the Beach in 1968

September 13th, 2011

Posted in Doctor Holzman

It may have been a foregone conclusion, even from his earliest years, that Dr. Steven Holzman would become a plastic surgeon.

“This is me during one of my first plastic surgery evaluations. The year is 1968 at Belmar Beach in New Jersey and I am with my father’s sister Gilda. I called it her ‘mushy tushy!’”

Yes, before Dr. Holzman graduated from the University of Texas in Austin and earned his M.D. from the University of Texas Health & Science Center in Houston, going on to residency and a number of teaching appointments in addition to his many years at our practice offering plastic surgery in Austin, he made his first diagnosis on the beaches of New Jersey, declaring (perhaps subconsciously) that his aunt may benefit from a nip and tuck.

“I’m not so sure she liked that but I remember taking the picture just like it was yesterday.”

Austin Plastic Surgeon Discusses Breast Augmentation Popularity

According to the latest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation was the most performed surgical cosmetic enhancement procedure in 2010. Dr. David Mosier, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Austin, TX, recently discussed the growing popularity of this procedure within his practice, as well as the possible reasons influencing the overall increase in cosmetic procedures.

Surgical cosmetic procedures rose nearly 9% from 2009-2010. Of the more than 1.6 million surgical procedures performed in 2010, breast augmentation was the most popular form of surgical enhancement with more than 318,000 procedures. At his Austin plastic surgery practice, Dr. David Mosier says he experienced a similar increase in procedures performed in 2010. He adds that because he and the other surgeons specialize in the use of breast implants, breast enlargement is the most requested procedure at the Plastic Surgery Center of Austin.

Following a 2% decrease in the total number of cosmetic enhancement procedures performed from 2008-2009, Dr. Mosier says the 9% increase highlighted in the ASAPS study comes as no surprise to him and his colleagues. With the economy beginning to show signs of recovery, Dr. Mosier says many people are once again considering cosmetic procedures, whether they simply want to enhance their appearance, or feel a younger look will help them find work in such a competitive market.

In addition to the rebounding economy, Dr. Mosier says the other key factor to the increase in procedures performed is the rise in approval of cosmetic enhancement in the U. S. highlighted in the ASAPS study: 51% of Americans now approve of some form of aesthetic enhancement. He adds that he expects this number to continue to climb as the industry continues to inspire innovation as they strive to meet patient demand and developing trends in cosmetic enhancement.

Dr. Holzman Perfroms Post-Bariatric Procedures at Austin Plastic Surgery Practice

At his Austin plastic surgery] practice, Dr. Steven Holzman specializes in the combination of several cutting-edge techniques to provide post-bariatric surgery cosmetic enhancement, such as liposuction and abdominoplasty to remove excess skin following dramatic weight loss. At his plastic surgery practice, he recently discussed this procedure, and how it relates to the latest decision from the FDA that could affect 26 million Americans in all.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the LAP-BAND surgery for use in patients with a BMI 30-35 with one or more obesity-related conditions. The new approval could potentially affect more than 26 million Americans currently classified as such. Steven Holzman, MD, FACS, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Austin, TX, recently discussed his innovative approach to post-bariatric body contouring following a procedure such as LAP-BAND surgery.

Similar to the combination of procedures employed in the mommy makeover, such as breast augmentation and liposuction, Dr. Holzman says he incorporates a complex version of a thigh lift into a circumferential abdominoplasty to address the specific needs and expectations of each patient.

While many patients have similar aesthetic needs after weight loss surgery that can be addressed with an abdominoplasty or liposuction, Dr. Holzman says the combination of procedures known as a lower body lift can improve body contour by removing excess skin and creating a slimmer profile from head to toe. Because dramatic weight loss affects the entire body, Dr. Holzman says he is able to improve the entire body contour by including an inner and outer thigh lift. He adds that by improving a patient’s aesthetic appearance, they are able to continue the healing process and pursuit of a healthier lifestyle as they begin to see their hard work reflected in their physical appearance.

Ultimately, Dr. Holzman says the circumferential abdominoplasty can often address the cosmetic enhancement needs of his post-bariatric body contouring patients. However, many patients decide to undergo some variation of the entire body contouring process because they hope to supplement their healthy choices with an improved aesthetic appearance.

MS. JILL DIECKMANN: At the Plastic Surgery Center of Austin, we have a very small staff. It’s very quaint and you will feel comfortable because you will meet with every one of us.

DR. STEVEN HOLZMAN: Welcome to the Plastic Surgery Center of Austin’s Website. I’m Dr. Steven Holzman. I’m one of its founders. And I invite you to spend a little time on our website. Look at our photographs. Look at our videos. And educate yourself a little bit about what we offer here.

DR. DAVID MOSIER: We try to make our practice very comfortable for our patients. A patient walks into the office they’ll not only see a comfortable environment, but they’ll also see a very friendly face at the front desk and friendly people in the back.

DR. HOLZMAN: We are mostly a cosmetic practice with probably 75 or 80% of it being cosmetic. But we do a lot of reconstruction on patients who really need surgery for their breast cancer or skin cancer and other different types of problems.

DR. MOSIER: I love doing plastic surgery because there’s such a wide variety of cases that come into the office. It’s great to see a patient who’s had a really nice result and come back and want a different procedure.

DEBRA: They always call to verify the appointment. They’ve always been very friendly and they, they were really good about answering all of my questions.

MS. DIECKMANN: They really try to get to know you and things about your life and the reasons that you’re here.

JOHANNA: I’ve recommended Dr. Mosier to several of my friends who’ve come to him and had procedures done. And they’re all very happy with the results.

MS. DIECKMANN: I’ve been here with both Dr. Mosier and Dr. Holzman for over then years. They are very personable people. They’re fun to be around. Our patients feel very comfortable after their surgery. And most of our patients end up referring a friend or a family member. We don’t do much advertising here so most of our business is generated through previous patients. And that’s one of the things that makes us feel the best about what we do. ‘Cause that—we’re helping someone and they are so happy that they are sending their friends, their relatives, their neighbors to see us as well.
