Ear Pinning Surgery (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty, also referred to as ear pinning surgery, can be performed by our Austin-area plastic surgeons to alter the position, shape, and size of the ears. Individuals with prominent ears can undergo otoplasty to have the ears surgically repositioned to lie more flatly against the sides of the head. In this procedure, fatty deposits and cartilage structures that cause the appearance of oversized or irregularly formed ears are eliminated or sculpted through a small incision along the outside edge of the ear. Any residual scarring from the procedure is typically well-hidden and virtually undetectable.

Results of Ear Surgery

After undergoing otoplasty, prominent ears appear more proportional and suitably positioned, making them far less noticeable. Ear pinning surgery can not only reduce the appearance of prominent ears, it can also have a very positive effect on our patients’ self-esteem and help them feel less self-conscious about the look of their ears.

Cosmetic Ear Lobe Repair

At our Austin practice, we offer cosmetic ear lobe repair to improve the appearance of earlobes that are irregularly formed, or have been torn or stretched. Using a few simple surgical techniques, our surgeons are able to restore a more natural shape to damaged earlobes. It is also possible to alter the shape of earlobes to make them more aesthetically pleasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does PSCA file insurance for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and/or brachioplasty (the removal of excess skin due to excessive weight loss)?

A: No. Some physicians' offices will file these procedures under insurance, but our office considers them strictly cosmetic.

Q: Does your office perform the gastric bypass procedure?

A: No. Only a general or bariatric surgeon is qualified to perform this procedure. After extreme weight loss, plastic surgery may be desired to remove excess skin and fat. Even though some insurance companies may cover abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and brachioplasty, our office considers these procedures to be strictly cosmetic.

Q: I was seen in the emergency room and the ER told me I need to see a specialist right away. Can I make an appointment?

A: The only way that we can see a patient within 48 hours is if one of our doctors was ’on-call’ at that particular ER on that particular day. Otherwise, we can only fit you in at our first availability. Unfortunately, availability may sometimes be several weeks away.

Q: Is there any possible way you can get me in sooner?

A: Considering that we are a specialist office, it is possible that we may be fully booked for up to one to three months in advance and we are normally ’double-booked’ up two weeks in advance, which would result in making it very difficult to obtain an appointment sooner. If this is an emergency, then the patient should go directly to an emergency room.

Q: What are your office hours?

A: Monday - Thursday (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM / 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM); Friday (8:00 AM - 1:00 PM). We are not open on weekends.

Q: What does ’on-call’ mean for plastic surgeons? What if I have received treatment from one of your plastic surgeons in the ER?

A: There are approximately 11 plastic surgeons in the Austin area that take turns being on-call for plastic surgery at all of the main Austin emergency rooms. If you are seen in the emergency room and you are referred to us for a follow-up, please call and make an appointment. Let us know the name of the physician who referred you to us, the name of the ER that referred you to our office, and the date on which you were seen in the ER. The plastic surgeon who is on call the day of your visit to the ER is responsible for your care. Please be aware, however, that you are ultimately responsible for fees associated with your follow-up care.
